Derek is a commercial barrister who practises principally in the companies, securities, takeovers, commercial and competition law fields.
He joined the independent bar in 2011 after more than 25 years as a corporate partner with Russell McVeagh. During the course of his career Derek has advised many major New Zealand and international companies, the Crown and Ministers of the Crown and has been involved in a number of the most significant commercial transactions undertaken in New Zealand.
Derek has significant experience in the energy, capital markets, financial services, telecommunications and information technology sectors. In addition to providing advice and solutions on complex and strategically important commercial issues, Derek has extensive experience in drafting commercial contracts and transaction documents.
Derek is currently an independent non-director member and Chair of NZX’s Regulatory Governance Committee. He was formerly Chairman of the New Zealand Markets Disciplinary Tribunal.
Derek is available to act as an arbitrator in both domestic and international arbitrations. He holds a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration and is a Fellow and Arbitration Panelist of a number of international arbitration institutions.
