James Tocher
General Background
James is one of the junior barristers at Thorndon Chambers. He acts as junior counsel for other barristers in Chambers and assists with legal research and client care. James acts on a wide variety of civil litigation and has appeared before the High Court and Court of Appeal. Before joining Chambers in 2020, James was a judges’ clerk at the High Court in Wellington. He was admitted to the bar in 2018.

James graduated from the University of Otago in 2017 with an LLB(Hons) and a BA in philosophy. While at university James competed in mooting and debating competitions at a national and international level and received the Law Society Prize for graduating top of his class. As a judges’ clerk, he worked on a broad spectrum of commercial, public and criminal cases. James has a particular interest in private law, including tort, company and taxation law.
