Dr Derek Johnston
Dr Derek Johnston is a commercial barrister who provides specialist independent advice in the company, commercial, competition and financial markets law fields. He has significant experience in the capital markets, energy, telecommunications and IT sectors.
He joined the Independent Bar in 2011 after many years as a corporate partner with a leading New Zealand law firm. Derek has advised many major New Zealand and international companies, the Crown and Ministers of the Crown and has been involved in negotiating and documenting a number of the more significant commercial transactions undertaken in New Zealand. This has included a number of acquisition and joint venture agreements and long term contracts, particularly in the oil and gas and telecommunications and IT sectors.
Derek also sits as an arbitrator, principally in relation to commercial disputes. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand and a number of other arbitration organisations. He is on the Reserve Arbitration Panel of Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the Arbitration Panels of the Asian International Arbitration Centre and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.
He recently completed a three year term as the independent non-director member and Chair of the Regulatory Governance Committee of NZX Limited. Prior to that Derek was Chair of the New Zealand Markets Disciplinary Tribunal.
